WAFE Department | A.A.S. Associates of Applied Science Degree

Associate degree programs for the following trades: Limited Energy, Protective Signaling, Plumbing and Painting.
Students enrolled in our apprenticeship program will go to school in the evenings and work at a company in their trade during the day.
Apprentices typically start their classroom hours in fall term once accepted in the program. These programs range from two to four years depending on the requirements for that trade. After successful completion of the related instruction coursework and on-the-job hours, students have the opportunity to take the state licensure test for the journeyman card in their field.

Apprenticeship programs
Plumbers assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings, medical gas systems and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units and dishwashers, according to specifications and plumbing codes. They locate and mark the position of pipe, pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, spirit level and plumb bob. They cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and a threading machine. Plumbers also bend pipe using a pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over a block and bending it by hand, assemble and install valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of various metals or glass, vitrified clay and plastic, and use hand tools and power tools. Plumbers may weld holding fixtures to structures.
Program Outcomes
You will develop some exciting new skills in this program. Among these new skills, you should be able to:
- Complete a minimum of 7,700-8,000 hours state of Oregon-approved on-the-job training (OJT).
- Repair, install and maintain a variety of building construction projects using trade specific tools and techniques in compliance with building codes and OSHA regulations.

Preparation of surfaces is one of the most important parts of painting. Surfaces may include wood, metal, masonry, etc. Besides paint, other types of wall coverings may be applied, such as vinyl, fabric and metal surfacing materials. Decorative applications of paint and innovative designs are also part of the job.
Program Outcomes
You will develop some exciting new skills in this program. Among these new skills, you should be able to:
- Complete a minimum of 6,000-7,000 hours state of Oregon-approved on-the-job training (OJT).
- Repair, install and maintain a variety of building construction projects using trade specific tools and techniques in compliance with building codes and OSHA regulations.

LEB License: This apprenticeship leads to the Limited Energy Class B Technician license. Limited Energy Class B Technicians install, maintain, replace and repair electrical systems and equipment of under 100 volt-amperes, including communications systems (data telecommunications, intercom and paging) and specialized control systems (HVAC, medical, boiler, clock and instrumentation).
LEA License: This apprenticeship leads to the Limited Energy Class A Technician license. Limited energy Class A technicians install, maintain, replace and repair electrical systems and equipment of under 100 volt-amperes, including protective signaling systems (fire alarm, nurse call, security), communications systems (data telecommunications, intercom and paging) and specialized control systems (HVAC, medical, boiler, clock and instrumentation).

- Complete the 4,000-6,000 hours state of Oregon-approved on-the-job training.
- Apply theory to electrical wiring.
- Repair, install electrical wire devices according to licensure regulations to meet NEC and OSC for inside electrician, limited energy technician license A, limited manufacturing plant electrician, sign assembler/fabricator, sign maker/erector and stationary engineer.

Trades are in large demand, offer good pay, steady work and opportunities to advance.
- Plumber average journeyman wage $36.96 hourly; apprentice starts $16.63.
- Painting average journeyman wage $22.50 hourly; apprentice starts $15.75.
- Limited Energy A license average journey $31.37-$32 hourly; apprentice starts $15.68-$16.
- Limited Energy B license average $30 hourly; apprentice starts $15.

Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology & Management
Students in our apprenticeship programs can transfer up to 60 credits of related training coursework to use toward a Bachelor's of Science in Technology and Management at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT).
Bachelor of Applied Science in Operations Management
Students in our apprenticeship programs can transfer up to 30 credits of related training coursework to use toward a Bachelor's of Science in Operations Management at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT).
