Unlike adult corrections, which focuses primarily on punishment, juvenile corrections prioritizes helping young people get back on the right track. This field offers an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of young people at a critical point in their development. 

The Juvenile Corrections Certificate is a one-year program developed in cooperation with the Oregon Youth Authority This comprehensive program equips you with the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience necessary to excel in juvenile corrections settings.

This one-year Juvenile Corrections Certificate program, developed in partnership with the Oregon Youth Authority, equips you with the knowledge and practical experience sought by employers in juvenile correctional facilities.

You should graduate with these skills:

  • Understand the juvenile corrections system: Explore the history, philosophy and legal framework of juvenile corrections in the United States.
  • Youth development and behavior: Gain insights into adolescent development, common challenges faced by youth in the justice system and effective intervention strategies.
  • Communication and collaboration: Develop communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with youth, families and colleagues.
  • Trauma-informed practices: Learn to implement trauma-informed approaches that promote healing and positive development for youth.
